You procrastinate because of fear

Watch this short video to learn how to overcome it.

  • Okay, so you've taken the quiz and the real reason you've been procrastinating is fear, and I'm gonna show you exactly why that's happening and what you can do to overcome it today.

So our feelings are what drive our actions. The only reason we ever do anything is because of how we feel. So it's natural that if you're feeling fear, you won't wanna take any action. It makes sense.

Your brain is naturally wired to want to run away from any perceived danger or threats, which in this case is probably your goal or your dream that you're going after. But actually the best way to free yourself from potential danger isn't to avoid it. It is to become someone who can handle it.

Here's what I mean. There's an amazing scene from the movie, the Princess Bride, where two characters are trying to outsmart each other, and one of them says to the other, “Let's have a battle of wits in a game where we're gonna have two glasses of wine and I'm gonna poison one of them.” So he turns around, he poisons one of the glasses, and he brings them back.

He sits one of the glasses down in front of the guy and he sits one in front of himself. Now the guy has to decide which one has the poison, and then they're both going to drink. So he says, “Well, it can't be the one in front of me, because it would be stupid to choose the one in front of me. But then you would know that I would think that, so you've obviously put it in front of you. But you're also probably smart enough to think that I would know that too – and so you wouldn't put it in front of you.” And he goes around and round in this kind of rigmarole of “which one should he choose?” And he finally decides one, and they both drink.

Now the guy who has chosen the drink, who's sure that he has chosen the one that doesn't have the poison in it, suddenly falls over and dies. So another character then asks the guy who's still alive, how did you know that he was going to choose the one with the poison? And he said, “I didn't. They were both poisoned, but I've been building up an immunity over time to drink the poison so that I could handle it.”

So the lesson here is instead of trying to avoid the danger by calculating the perfect decision, you learn to create your own security so you can expose yourself to danger and know you can handle it. So let's talk about how you actually do that.

The opposite of feeling fearful is to feel secure or certain, and let's talk about what security really is. Security is not something that comes from outside. Security is actually a feeling that you generate within yourself from what you are thinking. The things that your brain thinks creates the security for you – like a certain amount of money – actually don't create security, because those things could be taken away at any moment.

Like not to freak anyone out, but we don't know what's gonna happen in the outside world and we can't control it. So instead of trying to control what's going on outside of us, we can control the feeling of security that we create for ourselves. So here's the thought I want you to practice. “My security isn't outside of me, it’s in my own ability to figure things out.”

Because when you really believe that thought, you can expose yourself to as much danger as you want and still feel secure because you know that you are the one that creates it, that you are someone who can figure anything out. And the beautiful thing about this is that when you realise that security is a feeling that you generate within yourself, you become your own guarantee. You no longer need the world to be highly guaranteeable because you are highly guaranteeable. You believe in your own ability to show up and do the work and figure it out no matter what.

Okay, so go and practice thinking that you can figure anything out.
