Blog Every Single Day for Two Years

Status: Completed on July 21st 2021

There’s only a few moments in life when you get blessed with a lightning bolt. Where an idea hits you and BANG, just like lightning, you decide to make a change.

For some, it might be to give up smoking or pay off debt.

For me, my lightning bolt was to blog every single day.

For years, I’d been trying to blog consistently. I agonised about perfecting the writing (my best friend Georgia got so fed up, she actually pressed publish on my first post for me!).

But then I saw a post from the writer Sean Wes and in a miraculous instant, my mind was made up.

He said:

“Show up every day for two years. That’s the golden answer right there. It will make you money. It will build an audience. It will solve most of your problems. It will develop the tenacity you need to survive. It will teach you that those who are successful aren’t successful because of some condensed version of their story they gave on a podcast interview, but because they made a commitment to show up every single day when it was hard, sucked, and it looked like nothing would ever come of it. But no one will hear this advice because ‘show up every day for two years’ isn’t microwaveable.”

The last line hit me like a lightning bolt. I felt deeply seen. He knew I was looking for a magic solution, a fast track to success.

So I did it. I showed up every single day and wrote a blog post, for two years. On weekends and holidays and my birthday. Most of them sucked. Some were good. I developed my voice as a writer. I deepened my commitment to myself with every post.

I had many days where I considered stopping. But I kept publicly sharing about my goal, so it just felt like there was no option but to go on. I also felt the power of sunk cost. if I’d already done 43 days, or 202 days, or 564 days, how could I stop? I didn’t stop until my 25th birthday, exactly two years in. 730 days in a row.

The greatest gift it gave me was self-trust.

Now I was someone who always did what she said she would do.

This could be your lightning bolt too. What would change in your life if you showed up every day for two years?
